About Dentures

Dentures are a removable appliance used to replace missing teeth. They are fabricated using either acrylic or cobalt chrome, to which false teeth are added. Dentures help with speech, chewing, add support to your lips and chin, as well as improving the appearance of your smile.

Types of Dentures

We offer two types of dentures:

  • Partial: Replace one tooth or several teeth.
  • Full: Replace the whole set of teeth, either on the upper or lower arch.

Dentures are kept in place by either using clasps that anchor around neighbouring teeth or by the dentures’ natural suction. On occasion, a denture fixative or glue is recommended to help keep the denture in place. All dentures are custom-designed by our dentist or dental technician to suit each patient’s individual needs.

The Process

  • Initial Consultation: Your dentist will assess your needs and thoroughly examine your mouth to determine suitability for dentures, taking into account your existing teeth, restorations, gum health, and bite. If you have no natural teeth, we’ll assess your gums and underlying bone. The procedure will be explained, and a treatment plan will be provided, stating all the stages and costs.

Generally, 2 to 4 appointments will be necessary as dentures are made in stages. The stages are the same whether you’re having full or partial dentures, except for immediate dentures, when a tooth is extracted, and the denture is fitted immediately to replace the missing tooth.

  • Impression Appointments: Impressions (moulds) of your upper and lower teeth will be taken and sent to our dental laboratory, where a custom tray and wax bite block will be fabricated.
  • Trial Denture Appointment: Using the custom tray and bite registration, your trial denture will be created. This includes setting the teeth in wax and, for cobalt chrome dentures, completing the metal framework. The trial denture will be tried in to ensure a proper fit, comfort, and bite alignment.
  • Final Fitting: Your custom-made dentures will be fitted, and any necessary adjustments will be made.

Caring for Dentures

It will take time to get used to new dentures, and patience is needed. Upper dentures may initially affect your speech, but this will pass as your tongue adjusts. If you experience soreness, contact us, as minor adjustments may be necessary.

Keeping your dentures clean is crucial. Rinse them after meals, if possible, and brush them twice daily using toothpaste or a mixture of soap and water. Remove your dentures at night to allow your gums to rest and soak them in a denture solution. Always rinse or brush your dentures before reinserting them.

Regular dental examinations are still important, even without natural teeth, as your dentist needs to check for changes in your gums, underlying bone, and oral tissues.

FAQs

Will dentures feel uncomfortable or look fake?

Not at all. Today’s dentures are designed to look and feel more natural than ever. We custom-make your dentures to suit your mouth, bite, and facial structure – so they’re comfortable, secure, and blend beautifully with your smile.

How long do dentures last?

With proper care, most dentures last between 5 and 10 years. Over time, your gums and jawbone can change shape, so we recommend regular checkups to make sure your dentures still fit well and function properly.

Can I eat and speak normally with dentures?

Yes, though there may be a short adjustment period at first. Your dentures will help you chew more easily and speak more clearly by restoring the support your teeth provide. We’ll guide you through every step to help you feel confident from day one.

Do you offer emergency care for a broken denture?

Absolutely. If your denture cracks or breaks, avoid trying to fix it yourself, especially with glue, as this can complicate the repair process. Instead, gather all the broken pieces and give us a call straight away. We’ll do our best to organise a fast, dependable repair so you can get back to smiling confidently.
